The invention discloses hydrated celite, how to make hydrated celite, and processes for purifying DNA with hydrated celite. The new composition is of the formula: (see formula I) wherein R' is OH, R is SiO2, and R'' is OH, and repeating units of the composition comprising the formula: (see formula II) wherein R' is independently OH or (see formula III) R is SiO2, and R'' is independently OH or (see formula IV).
