The lighting unit is of a type that is based around a relatively short fluorescent tube that can be used as a portable unit. In order that it can be fixed in various positions it is fitted with a clamping support that has a tubular shape with brackets that fit to the sockets of the lighting tube. The ends of the tubular support has an angled arms for clamping onto a object. The spacing of the arms can be varied with a coil spring into the tube to provide clamping force.
