The method involves reading in and storing at least one value for a real length and at least one value for an associated reference length. At least one numerical scale characteristic is determined by dividing each real length value by the associated reference length value and is stored. At least one scale characteristic is represented by visually displaying a numerical ratio (4) and/or by graphically displaying a ruler element (3) with a scale corresp. to the numerical scale characteristic. The value of the real length is read in by measurement with a measurement device and the associated reference value is read in via an input device.
