A communications device (10) is attachable to a host computer (12). The device (10) may transmit, receive, and store entire files of data with their attributes needed for recognition, reading, and writting by a proper application program. Logical devices such as processors (20), filters (34), locks (32), and telecommunications devices (26) in the communications device (10) may include electronic circuits for assembling message files and for transmitting selected data files to and from an attached host computer (12). The communications device (10) may also transmit, store and receive with respect to a second remote device (11) or a computer (13) with a modem. The device (10) may permit file communication without permitting access to its own host computer (12) or workstation (12). The device (10) may transmit while the computer (12) is off, and without logging into the second computer (13) provided with the same type of device. The device (10) facilitates point to point communication of data files in a secure manner for creation of virtual private networks between individuals over public telecommunications networks (14) such as telephone networks.
