Marine microalga and its use in agriculture and in obtaining polyunsaturated fatty acids. A strain of the marine microalga Isochrysis galbana, lodged with the CCAP under deposition number CCAP927/15, is capable of producing high quantities of polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA). The microalgal strain grows adequately at a temperature of 18 degree C to 25 degree C at a pH of 7 to 9.5, preferably a pH of 7.65 to 8.00. The microalgal strain, cultured at 20 degree C in a five- litre fermenter agitated by paddles and with continuous lighting, produces EPA in a quantity of at least 39.5 mg per gram of dry material. This strain is adequate for use in aquaculture (feeding of fish and mollusc larvae) and for obtaining EPA and/or an oil rich in EPA and DHA which are necessary for human nutrition and health. |
