The gas burner device has an ionisation electrode (15) for monitoring the flame and an exhaust gas chamber (10) into which the combustion gases pass. The combustion air is fed into a partial gas flow in a recirculation line (12) between the exhaust gas chamber and the air blowing fan. The free cross-section of the recirculation line is adjustable by a control element (14) controlled by the ionisation electrode. Before and/or during ignition, the control element closes the cross-section or at least holds it at less than the operating cross-section; in operating mode the free cross-section in the recirculation line is increased.
