A variable speed mechanism for a transmission includes a primary rotatable shaft (11) having a plurality of substantially contiguous gears of varying diameters, the contiguous gears being comprised of a plurality of circular gears (1) having varying diameters separated by, and alternating with, a plurality of ramp gears (2). The ramp gears (2) are eccentrically disposed and consist of circular sectors on diametrically opposite sides matching equivalent sectors of adjacent circular gears (1), the diametrically opposed sectors being joined by sectors of progressive and continuously changing radius which thereby forms a complete gear providing a continuous pathway between adjacent circular gears (1). At least one mating gear (3) is mounted on a shaft (8) parallel to the primarily rotatable shaft (11), the parallel shaft (8) being movable radially relative to the fixed center line of the primary rotatable shaft (11). A longitudinally sliding mechanism (25) slides the mating gear longitudinally between the circular gears (1) by following the continuous pathway of the ramp gears (2). An electronic control operatively associated with the longitudinally sliding means times the longitudinally sliding means in coordination with rotation of the ramp gears (2) to direct the mating gear (3) in the continuous pathway of the ramp gears (2).
