The controller improves printing quality by quartering each tone of 256 to disperse chorminances on one pixel area uniformly, and therefor includes a line memory(11) storing one line print data from a frame memory, a divider(12) quartering one pixel print data from the line memory, a thermal transfer counter(13), a comparator(14) for comparing the counts with the lower bit data from the divider, an adder(15) adding the upper bit data from the divider to the result from the comparator, a data register(16) storing the added data, a tone counter(17) for counting the quartered tones, a comparator(18) comparing the register with the tone counter to provide thermal data to a TPH(Thermal Print Head), and a controller(20) controlling the heat of the TPH according to the data lead of the line memory and the comparator(18).
