The method for estimating image motion in a video processing system having a test image and several candidate images involves selecting a candidate image and determining the difference between the test image and the selected candidate image. The image motion is estimated according to the image motion determination. The duration of the image motion estimation process is determined. The image motion estimation is repeated in accordance with the duration determination. Preferably, the determined difference decreases the motion estimation is repeated. The motion estimation method involves determining whether the difference continues to decrease when the estimation is repeated.
