The invention relates to a plate heat exchanger 1 comprising a number of opposing plate-like heat transfer elements 2, which are combined into an assembly, in which heat is transferred from steam that is to be condensed and is introduced into every other space between plates, to liquid that is to be evaporated and is introduced into every second space between plates respectively. According to the invention the heat exchanger comprises a duct 5 for the introduction of liquid to be evaporated, which passes through the heat transfer elements 2 transversely at their lower part and opens out into the space between plates in the evaporation side. In each of the said spaces between plates a vertical column 16 has been defined by means of seals 15, the column guiding the liquid fed in to the upper end 17 of the space between plates, from whence the liquid disperses downwards as a flowing membrane on the opposing heat transfer surfaces of the elements. Located close up to the transverse liquid inlet duct 5 is a parallel duct 10 for the removal of condensate, which latter duct is connected to the space between plates on the condensation side, so that the outgoing condensate preheats the incoming liquid that is to be evaporated inside the plate assembly. The heat exchanger can also be provided with a duct 12 for unevaporated liquid, which runs transversely over the elements 2 for feeding circulated liquid into the said columns 16 that are formed for the liquid fed in. <IMAGE>
