PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method by which a multilayer coating film having excellent finished appearance and excellent also in physical properties such as chipping resistance is formed when the top of a substrate is successively coated with an intermediate coating film and a final coating film by a wet-on-wet process. SOLUTION: In the method for forming a coating film in which an intermediate coating film, a base coating film and a clear coating film are successively formed on a substrate by a wet-on-wet process, each of an intermediate coating material for forming the intermediate coating film and a base coating material for forming the base coating film contains an amido-containing acrylic resin and a curing agent, and the curing agent contained in the intermediate coating material comprises an aliphatic isocyanate type active methylene blocked isocyanate having >3 functional groups on the average.
