Switching device for a high voltage circuit with pulse transformers

The switching device includes a low voltage circuit (16) which forms the primary windings of a set of transformers (118, 218...) connected in series. A set of secondary transformers (120, 220) produce switching pulses. The transformers have a toroidal core with the diameter of each of the first set of transformers being greater than that of the secondary transformers. The primary turns (122, 212...) of the first set of transformers is made with highly insulated cable. A rigid metal rod lies on the common axis of the first cores and is insulated from the cores by a solid moulding. The switching circuit (10) connected to the secondary windings of the secondary transformers is a MOSFET, an IGBT, a bipolar transistor, or a thyristor with a series diode (36) in the first two cases.
