<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inflator such that the flow rate of gas released varies in such a way as to be slow in the initial stage and subsequently become faster and then slower, with these processes completed within a normal time during which an automobile crash occurs. SOLUTION: This inflator includes a vessel 10 provided with a sealed outlet 20 and an opening means 29 for opening the outlet 20 upon detection of the crash of an automobile, and pulse-forming valve means 80, 82 installed between a gas source 26 and an airbag 98 and provided with a variable gas exit area. In order to vary the flow rate of gas passing through the pulse-forming valve means, the size of the gas exit area of the pulse-forming valve means is controlled depending on a force applied by the gas to the pulse-forming valve means, and the force varies depending on the differential pressure between gas in the gas source 26 and gas in the airbag 98.</p> |
