PURPOSE: To carry out spherical processing in a short time with its yield made high by determining an optical center based on the outer diameter of a refraction factor distribution type plastic rod having a refraction factor distribution vertically with respect to the optical axis direction, cutting its end face, and forming it into a spherical surface shape. CONSTITUTION: The optical center of a GRIN rod 1 is made to coincide with a mechanical center axis by allowing an automatic position control means 36 and a holder drive means 27 to drive a holder 25 in such a way the center of the outer diameter of the GRIN (refraction factor distribution type) rod 1 indicated over a television monitor 35 coincide with the center of a streak pattern generated by interference. Under this condition, the GRIN rod 1 is rotated by a rod rotating drive means 38, and a rod side surface is thereby cut by a bite 28. Subsequently, a spherical lens cut out of the rod is set in a side way motion polishing machine, and it is polished so as to be formed into a spherical surface plastic radial GRIN lens both end surfaces of which are mirrors. |
