The cartridge contains a pyrotechnic element (3) which emits infrared radiation at a predetermined wavelength as it is consumed, and has an igniter (52) for the element. The element itself is made in a series of separate blocks (133,134) with different surfaces and/or volumes and individual igniters (52,56,57,58,59,132) and have holders (35,38) which release the blocks virtually simultaneously with their ignition. The blocks' surfaces and volumes are determined so as to produce a varying level of infrared radiation - an initial short phase of intense radiation, followed by a long phase of comparatively weak radiation. The holders (35,38) form an open sleeve which melts at a temp. lower than that at which the blocks of pyrotechnic material burn, and the cartridge fits into a lengthwise launch tube (2), being ignited as it is expelled.
