The intra ocular lens (15) is made such that only in its central area (15') does it act as a convex lens. Although it is a very powerful lens (e.g. +60 dioptre), due to the central section being on the optical axis (13) of the eye it can be kept small (e.g. 5.5mm) and this is held at a distance from the iris which reduces irritation. Around the central area is a disc shaped outer area (15'') with the edge facing the retina being rounded. Diametrically opposing each other on the outer area are two extension pieces (18) which join two spring arms (19) for locating the lens. A hole (20) is used for an insertion instrument.
