At least one suction chamber (4) of the unit (10) is formed partly by the unit and partly by a workpiece surface (8). The chamber formation has an elastic seal (5) between it and the workpiece of rubber or similar material. The suction unit consists of a profiled support (1) and a suction strip (2) of a flexible, compressible material, such as porous rubber, with the support and strip vulcanised or glued together. The suction strip contains at least one recess, forming the suction chamber, coupled to a cavity (9) in the profiled support via a suction bore (3).
