The device extracts unfolded boxes or similar flat items (2) from a continuous stack moved at variable speed at an angle on a transport belt (1). A height-adjustable retention rail (4) determines the height of the stack which is detected by a sensor (5). At least one optical measurement device (16) determines the instantaneous position of a box back. A gripper (8) for random sampling is mounted on a movable carriage (9). The extracted samples are placed in a magazine. A slider is activated after a defined number of samples has been extracted.
