A power fail recovery method includes a power restoration procedure for gas chromatograph running unattended which accounts for the interruption of the analysis sequence. When power is restored, the gas chromatograph first performs initial diagnostic tests. Next, the gas chromatograph returns to the setpoints defined prior to power interruption according to the start-up procedures for operation to minimize endangering sensitive components such as the analytical column or detectors. The column is cleared of samples that were being analyzed when the power failed. From this point, the analysis sequence continues such that no sample information is lost, i.e. interrupted analyses are repeated before continuing with the rest of the sequence.
