A plurality of electrostatic recording units Y, C, M, B are arranged along a path for the movement of a recording medium. Each unit is provided with a electrostatic latent image support member (48), a developing means (54, 54') disposed on the upstream side of the support member (48) with respect to the mentioned path, and a cleaning means (60) disposed on the downstream side of the developing means (54, 54'). The developing means is provided with a developer container (66) comprising a developer reservoir (70), and a developer agitator (76) positioned above the reservoir (70) and communicating with the reservoir (70) via a passage (82). The cleaning means (60) of one of two adjacent units is disposed adjacently to the developer reserver (70) in the developer holding container (66) constituting a part of the developing means (54, 54') of the other unit.
