In a process of non-contact distance sensing, in particular to measure the distance from obstacles in the vicinity of motor vehicles, a first measurement procedure produces absolute values for the particular distance in a first measurement range. A second measurement procedure yields relative values in a second measurement range that overlaps with the first. Absolute values from the first measurement procedure that fall within the overlapping range are used to calibrate the relative values of the second measurement procedure.
