Application of a character in a visible surface of a tyre

In a method for applying a trade mark or other symbol onto the outer sidewall (1) of a tyre the tyre surface is vulcanised first and the marks (24) engraved in the rubber afterwards. Appts. for producing the marks (24) includes an engraving unit and a tyre holder which are moved in three dimensions relative to each other. A control moving the tyre and the engraving unit determines the profile of the marks. Also claimed is a tyre with engraved information (24) in the sidewall strip (2).
