A fuel dispenser comprises a distributed dispenser control including a plurality of microcontroller nodes and a communications bus connecting the microcontroller nodes each of which is associated with a respective component or group of components. This reduces the amount of information that requires to be processed by a single processing unit enabling additional features to be more easily incorporated in a basic dispenser design, or to be retrofitted to dispensers employing the present invention. <IMAGE>
