PURPOSE: To easily designate a comparison image from the whole image and make the comparison image easy to agree with an object by storing position data which show relative positional relations of a plurality of picture elements designated as the standard image in a relative coordinate memory and carring out matching according to the position data. CONSTITUTION: An object to be inspected is photographed by a camera and the image V within a photographic area S0 having X- and Y-axes is taken in. A reference image setting area S1 having x- and y-axes and upper left angle ORG as the origin is set in the area S0 and the coordinates x, y are designated to designate a reference image VC only including the feature parts of the object. The relative coordinates of the image VC are stored in a relative coordinate memory. A comparison image VD is produced by designating picture elements one by one by a comparison image designating means from the photographed image and pattern matching of every picture element with the image VC is carried out. The absolute coordinates of picture elements of the image VD can be expressed by the relative coordinates of the image VC and the coordinates of comparison positions W and while the position W being changed, matching is carried out, so that while the calculation amounts are remarkably lessens, the angle of the image V can be detected.
