An apparatus and a method for cutting sewn material in a sewing machine are provided to perform a driving for moving from a retreat position to a cutting position and a driving for hanging a string shape material by a single driving source. A body member(53) has a hooking member(53a) for hooking the sewn product. A fixing knife edge(55) is fixed to a predetermined position of the body member. A cutting knife edge(56) cuts the sewn product, is operated toward the fixing edge when cutting and arranged at the position separated from the cutting position. A driving device moves between the retreat position where without sewing is interrupted and the cutting position. The hooking member is installed at the body member.
