An image pickup apparatus and an auto focus control method are provided to display a through-image, namely, a through-the-lens image of an object by driving an image pickup device suitably for the through-image when a user does not immediately photograph the object. It is determined whether a shutter button is pressed by half(S2). If the shutter button is pressed by half, an auto focus operation by a contrast detection method is executed under the state that an image pickup device is controlled to be driven by a driving unit suitably for displaying a through-image(S8). It is determined whether the shutter button is pressed fully at a stroke(S5). If the shutter button is pressed fully at a stroke, the auto focus operation by the contrast detection method is executed under the state that the image pickup device is controlled to be driven at higher speed than driven suitably for displaying the through-image(S6).
