PURPOSE: To suppress the production of acidic odor components such as acetic acid odor in a filter material containing cellulose fiber and activated charcoal. CONSTITUTION: This method for producing a filter material for cigarettes consists of an adding process where an adsorbent such as active charcoal and a powdery or granular thermoplastic resin having hot melt adhesiveness to an opened tow of cellulose ester fiber, a forming process where the tow containing the resin in wound to form a rod, a heat treating process where the rod is heat treated and the resin is melted in or after the forming process and a cooling process where the rod is cooled. The amounts to be added are 1-200 pts.wt. adsorbent and 0.5-50 pts.wt. thermoplastic resin having 50-200 deg.C melting point, 10-500μm average particle diameter based on 100 pts.wt. tow.
