PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound useful as a polymerization catalyst for a photo- and/or a thermosetting compositions in high yield by reacting a p-oxy-substituted phenyl alkyl sulfide compound with a halide compound in water without using an organic solvent. CONSTITUTION: (A) A sulfide compound of formula I (R1 is H, methyl, acetyl, benzoyl, etc.; R2 is H, a halogen or a 1-4C alkyl; R3 is a 1-4C alkyl or benzyl) is reacted with (B) a halide compound of the formula R4 X (R4 is a 1-4C alkyl, benzyl,α-naphthylmethyl,β-naphthylmethyl, etc.; X is a halogen) in water to provide (C) a sulfonium compound of formula II. Furthermore, the reaction is carried out preferably at 10-60 deg.C, more preferably at 25-45 deg.C reactional temperature. An acid is preferably made to coexist. For example, 4- hydroxyphenylmethyl sulfide is used as the component (A) and benzyl chloride is used as the component (B) to afford 4-hydroxyphenylbenzylmethylsulfonium chloride.
