PURPOSE: To obtain a catalyst enhanced in the conversion rate of ketones and not almost generating the lowering of activity by using a strong acidic sulfonic acid type ion exchange resin having a specific N,N-disubstituted mercaptoalkylamine bonded thereto through an ion bond. CONSTITUTION: As a catalyst at the time of the production of bisphenols such as bisphenol A by the catalytic condensation reaction of phenols with ketones, a modified strong acidic sulfonic acid type ion exchange resin is used. The specific N,N-disubstituted mercaptoalkylamine is represented by the formula (wherein R<1> is H or a 1-6C alkyl group, groups R<0> are respectively independently a 1-10C alkyl group or a 4 or 5C alkylene group formed by mutually bonding the ω-terminals of them and (a) and (b) are respectively independently an integer of 0-3 and (a+b) is 2 or 3). This catalyst has excellent features such that catalystic activity is higher than that of a conventional mercaptoamine catalyst and the lowering of activity caused by water formed as a byproduct is reduced. |
