Automatic welding comprises positioning two elements (10, 11) end-to-end with a narrow chamfer between their surfaces to be joined, and fixing a ring (32) to the lower element round which a welding head can circulate. The two elements are then fitted together and aligned, a welding head with a torch is mounted on the ring, and makes the required number of passes to produce a welded seam with the aid of a filling wire. An electric current is passed through the wire so it can be melted in the chamfer by an electric arc. An independent claim is included for an apparatus for the above process. |
