PURPOSE: To provide an image with stable gradation by deflecting a modulated and driven electron beam according to an input signal, and forming a visual image on the basis of the deflected electron beam. CONSTITUTION: A vertical deflection signal generator 1609 has n-sets of switching elements Sr1-Srn. These switching elements are switched synchronously with a signal Tr1 generated by a deflection signal control circuit 1608. Namely, when a scanning circuit 1602 turns ON a switch Si, the vertical deflection signal generator 1609 turns ON the switch Sri. On the other hand, a line memory 1605 stores the contents of parallel signals IG1 -IGn outputted from a shift register 1604 according to the signal TMRY from a driving signal control circuit 1603. The thus-stored contents are inputted to a modulation signal generating circuit 1607 as I'G1 -I'Gn . The circuit 1607 applies the voltage for increasing and decreasing the electron to be emitted from a surface conductive type electron emitting element according to the input data I'G1 -I'Gn . to outputs Dy1 -Dyn to make the phosphor of a display panel 1601 luminescent.
