The security background has a zone (T1) with a first set of coloured lines. The lines are parallel to each other and have a set thickness and separation. The thickness and separation are sufficient to allow the lines to be reproduced on a photocopier. The zone thus has a controlled density. Within the zones a number of sub-zones are filled with second groups of straight lines, of the same colour as the main set. The second line group is made up of straight lines parallel to each other, but of different thickness and separation to the first set of lines. The set of lines is not parallel to the first set of lines, and the lines are too fine to be reproduced fully by a photocopier. Different parts of the document using the fine line zones have the line sets at different angles to each other.
