The brake comprises traction members (1,2) for applying a brake shoe to a surface on a wheel of the vehicle, and a reaction member (11) cooperating with one or more levers (6',6'') which are joined to the traction members by couplings. The reaction member (11) is provided by the rim of the railway vehicle wheel, and the lever co-operates with the rim through a thrust member (9) in the form of a brake sole. Each lever can have two arms (7',8';7'',8'') on either side of its pivot (4',4'') and in variants of the design the reaction member can be fixed to the structure of the vehicle, while the braking surface is cylindrical and lies coaxially with the wheel.
