The method esp. for a container (11) with a screw-on lid, consists of stamping thread teeth (72) at a point close to the upper end (12) of the container body on a machine which performs a second operation at the other end (13). The second operation consists of shaping the edge at the opposite end of the body to the screw-on lid, using a matrix (15). The operation of the thread tooth stamping die is performed by a vertically-moving guide with an inclined surface (26) interacting with a matching surface on the inner end of the stamping die as the press moves down.
