A method for producing large volumes of titanium diboride (TiB2) whiskers - comprises heating a mixture of carbon source material with titanium and boron (hydr)oxides and/or alkali(ne earth) metal oxides, to which at least one alkali(ne earth) metal halide such as lithium chloride, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, lithium fluoride, sodium fluoride or potassium fluoride is added, along with a nickel and/or cobalt compound, for 0.8-18 hours at 1000-1800 deg.C and 10 mbar to 50 bar, in an inert or non-oxidising atmosphere. The quantities of carbon source material, titanium (hydr)oxide, boron (hydr)oxide and alkali(ne earth) metal oxide in the mixture correspond to the stoichiometric amounts present in the whiskers. Molar ratio of alkali(ne earth) metal halide to the sum of titanium and boron is 0.002-1:1. |
