The procedure uses convention gas meters to measure the flow rate in pipes. One meter (2) is placed at the start of the pipe (5). Other meters (2b,2c,2d) are at the point where the gas or liquid reaches the point of usage. All meters are electrically connected (8,9) to a control module (4) which evaluates the flow rate. If discrepancies occur, the main valve (1) is closed to prevent any further leakage. The control module (4) can be that of an alarm system, e.g. at household. The measured values can be transmitted to the control module via a power line, E-bus, or radio link.
