A mold in accordance with the present invention can be formed by a method which utilizes a fiber reinforced pre-ceramic resin composite which is cured and fired to form a continuous fiber ceramic composite (CFCC), or alternatively by use of a pre-ceramic matrix composite, which is cured, but not fired into a ceramic state. The mold is formed by laying composite layers (16, 20), which includes a pre-ceramic resin matrix and a reinforcing fabric, onto a plug (24) and applying pressure by a vacuum bag (28) which compacts the composite (27) to form a cured composite mold which may be fired to form a ceramic composite mold.
