The invention concerns substituted 2-phenylpyridines of formula (I), in which: n = 0, 1; R<1>, R<3> and R<4> represent H, OH, SH, NO2, NH2, CN, COOH, CONH2, halogen, alkyl, alkyl halide, alkoxy, alkoxy halide, alkyl amino, dialkyl amino, alkyl thio, alkyl thio halide, alkoxy carbonyl, amino carbonyl, alkylamino carbonyl, dialkylamino carbonyl; R<2> represents H, OH, SH, NO2, NH2, CN, halogen, alkyl, alkyl halide, alkoxy, alkoxy halide, alkylthio, alkyl thio halide, alkyl sulphinyl, alkyl sulphinyl halide, alkylsulphonyl, alkyl halide sulphonyl; R<5> represents H, CN or halogen; R<6>, R<8> represent H or halogen; R<7> represents H, OH, NO2, CN, CF3-SO2-O-, halogen, alkyl, alkyl halide, alkoxy, alkoxy halide; X represents -CO-, -O-C(R<9>, R<10>)-CO-, -S-(R<9>, R<10>)-CO-, -CH2-CH(R<11>)-CO-, -CH=C(R<11>)-CO-; R<9>, R<10> represent H or alkyl; R<11> represents H, halogen or alkyl; Z represents optionally substituted tetrahydrofurane-3-yl or -C(R<15>, COR<16>)-CH2-COR<17>; R<15> represents H or alkyl; R<16> and R<17> represent OH, NH2, pyrrolidinyl, piperidinyl, morpholinyl, alkoxy, alkenyloxy, alkinyloxy, alkoxyalkoxy, cycloalkyloxy, alkylamino, dialkylamino, cycloalkylamino, dicycloalkylamino, alkenylamino, alkinylamino, or alternatively together represent -N(R<18>)-N(R<19>)-, -N(R<20>)-; R<18>, R<19> represent H or alkyl; R<20> represents H, alkyl, alkenyl, alkinyl, alkoxy, alkenyloxy. The invention also concerns salts of these compounds and the use of the compounds and salts as herbicides and for drying out and defoliating plants.
