A method used in a well for controlling the filtration of a drilling, completion or workover fluid therein. The method comprises adding a predetermined amount of at least one hydrophobically modified guar gum derivative. In an alternative embodiment, the guar gum derivative is hydrophobically modified hydroxypropylated guar (HMPG). The invention relates to a drilling, completion or workover fluid comprising at least one hydrophobically modified guar gum derivative, and particularly viscosity-increasing agents such as polymers or reactive clay.
