In a method and an apparatus for sorting building rubble in order to obtain building material, in particular concrete aggregate and components which are lighter than the latter, preferably wood, the building rubble being transported through a water bath, the building material being caused to sink and the light components being caused to float, whereupon the building material and the light component are separately discharged, it is provided according to the invention that the building rubble, on its transport path through the water bath, is repeatedly lifted out of the water and brought back into the bath in free fall, and that, at the end of the transport path of the building rubble through the water bath, the building material is dewatered by dripping-off as it is discharged from the water with rolling-over, while the light component is freed of adhering grain components using mechanical loading by the building rubble and by rinsing in the water bath, before it is discharged.
