A composite material contains fibre, as short cut lengths anchored in embedding material, which is hardened from the fluid state. The novel feature is matted laying of the fibres into embedding material, with at least the predominant part of their length embedded. Also claimed are (1) a moulded composite body of fibres and embedding material; (2) a first prepn. to make the composite, where fibres are strewn randomly on fluid embedding material and sink in before hardening; (3) a second prepn. comprising mixing fibres and fluid and shaping before hardening; and (4) a third prepn. where the mixt. is placed on a substrate.
