Fuel injection timing installation e.g. for diesel engine fuel pump

A target instant for operation of the fuel injection pump is calculated on the basis of the operating conditions of the engine (30), and the actual instant is calculated from signals denoting the angular position of the piston. The difference is used to adjust the position of the rotary actuator (10) by means of a piston (21) under the control of a hydraulic pressure regulator valve (27) in response to an impulsive actuating signal with controllable duty ratio. This signal is generated at a predetermined instant such that the injection does not overlap a given opening duration of the regulator valve which varies with engine speed.
