An apparatus for dispensing fluids in small quantities (1) from a closed container (5) e.g. blood samples is of special value during the preparation of slides (2) for examination by microscope. A sample container (5) has a hollow cylindrical attachment (6) incorporating a sealing plug (7) which is secured to the container(s) by a screw cap (4). A separate dropper unit (3) having a hollow piercing needle (8) slides over the attachment (6) to puncture the plug (7) which self seals round the needle (8) during release of a small volume of fluid (1) to the slide (2) via the bore (9) where it is conveniently spread for observation using the integral blade (10,11).
