Agent (I) comprises interleukin-8 and/or synthetic peptides with biologically effective sequence regions, and usual carriers and additives. Also claimed are: (A) processes for improving and accelerating ripening of the cervix and for inducing birth; (B) a process for preoperative ripening of the cervix before planned termination of pregnancy in the first or second semester; using (I).
