In a loading apparatus for a drum-type barrel weapon, cartridges are inserted into a cartridge holder by means of a feed slide (1) under the action of a closing spring (4). In order to speed up the loading operation a pawl (13) is provided which can be driven in the opening direction and in the closing direction thereto by a threaded spindle (19) rotatable in both directions by a motor. The pawl (13) is automatically guided in one of two guides (9,10) and causes the feed slide (1) to follow movement in the opening direction and to then release same on termination of the opening movement. In movement in the opposite direction to the opening direction the pawl (13) is disengaged from the feed slide (1).
