The steering column comprises a tubular body (1) with an aperture (3) in it for the bolt (4) of a lock (5) which is fixed to the body. The edges of the aperture are turned slightly outwards in a radial direction (8,9) to reinforce the column at the position of the aperture, and it can have additional reinforcements (10) in the form of projections between the out-turned edges and the remainder of the body. The steering column body can incorporate an enlarged section (11) to allow a standard steering lock to be adapted to any size of column. The steering column body is made, for example, from sheet metal by stamping, rolling and crimping or welding.
