PURPOSE: To provide excellent characteristics freed from blow-up of engine rotation by detecting an engaging state before the start of shifting of a friction engagement element to establish one gear shift ratio during a shift from one change gear ratio to the other change gear ratio and regulating control of a hydraulic control means. CONSTITUTION: An automatic transmission T for a vehicle comprises a main shaft MS connected to the crank shaft 1 of an internal combustion engine E through a torque converter 2 having a lockup mechanism L; and a counter shaft CS connected thereto through a plurality of gear trains. In which case, an ECU controls hydraulic clutches C1-C4R for respective shifts through an oil pressure control circuit O based on various signals from various sensors S1-S7. In this case, during a shift from one change gear ratio to the change gear ratio, an engaging state before the start of the shifts of the hydraulic clutches C1-C4R for respective shifts to establish one change gear ratio is detected. Control of the oil pressure control circuit O is regulated according to the detecting result. |
