PURPOSE: To efficiently obtain an optically active R(-)-1-(substituted phenyl)-1,2- ethanediol useful as a synthetic intermediate, etc., for medicines and agrochemicals by asymmetrically reducing a specific 1-(substituted phenyl) ethanone with a yeast. CONSTITUTION: A 1-(substituted phenyl)ethanone represented by formula I (X is a halogen, a 1-6C alkyl or a 1-6C alkoxy; R<1> is H, a 1-6C alkyl or a 2-7C alkylcarbonyl, except the case where X is 4-Br or 4-methoxy) [e.g. 1-(2- chlorophenyl)-2-hydroxyethan-1-one] is added to an aqueous solution containing a yeast such as a baker's yeast and sucrose and the solution is stirred at 30 deg.C for 40hr to carry out the asymmetric reduction. CeliteR is then added to separate microbial cells by filtration and the resultant product is extracted with ether. The ether layer is washed with water and dried and the ether is distilled off under reduced pressure. The residue is purified by a silica gel chromatography to afford the objective optically active R(-)-1-(substituted phenyl)-1,2ethanediol represented by formula II. |
