PURPOSE: To provide a magnetic recording medium, such as magnetic tape, which has a magnetic coating film as a magnetic layer. CONSTITUTION: The Young's modulus in a transverse direction orthogonal with the longitudinal direction of a nonmagnetic base 1 of the magnetic recording medium having the magnetic layer 2 on the nonmagnetic base 1 is defined as EBT, the thickness as TB, the Young's modulus in a transverse direction orthogonal with the longitudinal direction of the magnetic layer 2 as ECT and the thickness as TC. The magnetic layer is formed so as to satisfy 12GPa<=EBT; TB+TC<=7μm. (EBT×TB+ECT×TC) (TB+TC)<2> >=3500Pamm<3> . Further, the FFT intensity at every wavelength component of the roughness curve of the magnetic layer 2 measured at a cut off value of 0.08μm is taken and the total sum of the FFT intensity of the wavelength component of >=10μm is defined as Pλ1, the sum total of the FFT intensity of the wavelength component of <=5μm as Pλs and the surface roughness of the magnetic layer 2 as SRa, then the following equation is satisfied: Pλ1/Pλs<=35; SRa<=0.006μm.
