An apparatus for checking a subtitle file is provided to be applied to a multimedia file display unit to check the error of the subtitle file and correct the error part of the subtitle file automatically, thereby preventing the subtitle from being improperly displayed on a screen due to the error of the subtitle file and preventing the display of the subtitle from being impossible. A pickup unit(110) reads a video file and a subtitle file from a storage medium. A DSP(Digital Signal Processor)(120) processes the video file and the subtitle file read from the pickup unit. A subtitle checking unit(160) receives the subtitle file processed by the DSP and checks a header part and a body part in order, and corrects a corresponding error part automatically. A decoder(130) decodes the video file processed by the DSP. A signal processing unit(140) outputs the video data of the decoded video file and the data of the corrected subtitle file.
